 About Organic Certification and Philosophy

I have always worked on farms that are Certified Organic, and I feel that it is important to grow food in a way that is socially and environmentally responsible (which doesn't necessary have to be Certified Organic - I know plenty of great farmers who choose not to participate in this program). Being Certified Organic gives me solid guidelines to follow and requires a level of accountability and record keeping that I believe will help me stay organized in both the short and long run. It does cost a little more money, requires me to use organic soil amendments, pest control and seeds, and to keep track of what and how much I harvest and sell each week. I want to be the best farmer I can be, and I feel this program helps me track my progress each year and aligns me with other like minded folks. I encourage you to ask any questions you may have about my growing practices, we are all in this together! Since 2015 (my first year at the farm) the gardens at The Farm by the River have been Certified Organic!  It is my great pleasure to grow and sell very official "Certified Organic" produce! Hooray!

In 2020 I decided to add on an addition certification called "Real Organic". This program is an organic farmer led initiative to distinguish farms that are continuing to practice traditional Organic Farming Techniques. These Real Organic Farms are going above and beyond the current standards set by the US Government and are committed to growing their fruits, vegetables and grains in soil, and their animals outside on rotated pasture plots.
