About Joanne, farmer at Mountain Heartbeet LLC

Farming is truly a calling. I did not grow up in a farming family, no I grew up in the suburbs in Manchester NH. Without growing up on a farm or access to family farm land I struck out to learn how to farm and then later on to find family's that would lease their land to me.

In the fall of 2024 Mountain Heartbeet started the move to the Behr Family Farm in Tamworth. A high tunnel was moved, fields were mowed, plowed, planted with garlic and cover crop and the next chapter began.

Mountain Heartbeet set roots down first at The Farm by the River in Effingham through an excellent stroke of luck, friendship and recognized exuberance & commitment to growing food for those around me!  I was fortunate to be here from 2015-2024. Bill & Eve Klotz helped incubate my business on their land and supported my efforts all along the way. UNH did a great article that included us! Check it out HERE!

From 2012 through 2014 I spent three years as assistant manager of Stout Oak Farm in Brentwood, NH.

Before that I completed a yearlong apprenticeship at Crystal Spring Farm in Brunswick, Maine. This is where I met Nicole & Olivia, who later introduced me to Bill & Eve and The Farm By The River.

I also spent two years as the Assistant Director of Agricultural Arts at the Hartsbrook School in Hadley, Massachusetts.
I earned a Permaculture Design Certification, and BS in Environmental Science from UNH. I have many years of gardening and sharing food with friends as a foundation for the work I do now. I have been known to turn many a backyard into a garden, spend late nights canning salsa and excitedly tell everyone I meet at the Farmers’ Market about the tastiness of kohlrabi!

I am so grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with The Farm By The River from 2015 to 2024 and The Behr Family Farm from 2025 until now. I feel incredibly fortunate to continue in a long tradition of farming and land stewardship on these lands.  I could never have gotten here without the help of my family and friends along the way, THANK YOU!

I am so excited to share my love of the White Mountains, farming and food with you. I look forward to learning about what enlivens you!
